About the Blog

February 2011

After a year-long hiatus, in which I spent much time reflecting on my work, passions, and talents, I am revisiting this blog and hoping to start again, although from a slightly different perspective.  Read on to learn more about my transition from classroom work to doula work, and my hopes for this evolving blog.

This blog has been my online “compost pile” of ideas, musings, questions related to my work as a Montessori educator-in-training…and then as a Montessori practitioner.  Now, it is expanding, to explore how I integrate Montessori principles into my current work as a labor and postpartum doula.

When I first started this blog over two years ago,  I was in the classroom full-time, finishing my AMI elementary training.  In 2009 I transitioned from an assistant position to leading a lower elementary class at a local Montessori charter school.  It was wonderfully challenging work, and it gave me the opportunity to experience firsthand the joys and frustrations of classroom life.

However, fairly early on, I began to realize that I wanted to share my passion for holistic human development with a broader audience…and I wanted to be able to reach out to families on a more individual level. After a lot of reflection, I made the decision to leave the classroom, and delve into the work of supporting families through the transition into parenthood, by become a labor and postpartum doula.  I now run my own doula practice, Cascadia Birth Services, and I’m slowly building up a repertoire of offerings to support families through the experience of transitioning to parenthood.

Even though I’m no longer in the classroom, I still use the Montessori training in my every day life and in the way I approach working with my clients.  I’m hoping this blog can take a new direction, one of exploring how we can support the holistic human development of children and families in their homes and communities. As always, I’m open to ideas and feedback, and I want to create dialog!

So, welcome back.  Pull up a chair, and a cup of tea, and let’s explore together!
