Children and Nature

My background and passion for environmental education comes through here.  I believe that children in today’s technology-driven world are hungry for more meaningful experiences that allow them the opportunity to engage with their world in a more hands-on, experiential manner.  These are some of my favorite books and resoures for fostering what Rachel Carson called a “sense of wonder” from the very beginning.

Rachel Carson, Sense of Wonder

This is one of my all-time favorite books about children and nature…

Richard Louv, The Last Child in the Woods

Gary Nabhan, The Geography of Childhood

Nabhan is a well-known environmental writer and local-food activist, and has a beautiful website. This book was required reading in my environmental education program, and for good reason. With lyrical and passionate prose, he outlines the importance of the deep connections between children and nature.
